En la década de 1870 formó parte de las exposiciones impresionistas en las cuales también participaron Pierre-Auguste Renoir y Edgar Degas. Su obra Impresión, sol naciente formó parte del Salon des Refusés de 1874.

El edificio que alberga el museo desde su fundación es el castillo del Louvre, luego reconvertido en palacio real. Su origen se remonta al siglo XII, y fue objeto de ampliaciones renacentistas y otras más tardías. En este edificio acumuló el rey Carlos V (1338-1380) sus colecciones artísticas.
